• Thailand beats Vietnam in takraw final

Sepaktakraw giant Thailand warmed up for the 15th Asian Games in Doha by winning the regu event at the China Open Championships.

Thailand, one of the favourites for gold at Doha 2006, beat the tournament’s surprise package Vietnam in the final on Sunday 12 November.

Vietnam star performer Trinh Dinh Kien suffered an injury which meant he could not play in the final. In his absence Vietnam slumped to a straight-sets defeat as Thailand took the crown.

Twenty five year-old spiker Trinh had inspired Vietnam in the qualification stages, helping his team to comfortable straight-sets wins over Malaysia and Indonesia and a 2-1 success over Korea. It was in the third group match against the Koreans that Trinh picked up his knock.

Vietnam’s taking down of Malaysia was especially impressive. The Malaysians won the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games title last year and are hoping to end a wait of 12 years for Asian Games gold at Doha 2006.

The Malaysians beat fierce rivals Thailand to claim 2005 SEA gold in Manila, and experts have been predicting their drought could come to an end in Doha in December.

Asian Games sepaktakraw events begin on 2 December at Al-Sadd Indoor Hall, with the first match-up being Thailand against Indonesia in the men’s team preliminary.
